"Ah, it were simple, dead simple. But with 'im, I learnt what it means to feel proper full, ya know? He’d always show up just when I needed 'im most. When life were a right mess, when I needed a pick-me-up, or even just to celebrate summat daft. Two slices o' bread, a wee dab o' butter, an’ that gooey heart that sticks a daft grin on yer face, like.
With 'im, there were nowt fake, no faff. No daft promises, no drama. Just proper magic. Crispy golden outside, melty goodness slippin’ down yer gob... what more do ya want, eh? Didn’t need owt fancy. He’d show up, the world stopped.
We had summat special, me an’ 'im. Those rainy nights, curled up under a blanket watchin’ Gotham, or lazy mornin’s when the fridge were bare as owt, but he’d still find a way to shine, tucked behind the mayo or them pickled onions. He just had that knack, ya know? Always there, always perfect.
But aye, there were darker days too. Days I didn’t give 'im the time o’ day. Burnt 'im, rushed 'im, left 'im on the edge. I knew I’d let 'im down. He’d show it, too – dry as cardboard, bitter round the edges, crunchy in all the wrong ways. Like he were sayin’, ‘Cheers for that, mate. Proper effort.’ And still, he stayed. Loyal, even when I didn’t deserve 'im.
Then I changed, didn’t I? Started messin’ about wi’ fancy recipes, cravin’ summat new. Meals that took longer, needed more kit, more time, more faff. And yet, they never hit the same. Not like 'im. I pushed 'im to the side, only bringin’ 'im out when there were nowt else. Like he were beneath me. Like a first love you outgrow but never forget.
Yet now, when I catch a whiff o’ toastin’ butter, or see 'im sittin’ there on someone’s plate, it all comes floodin’ back. The warmth, the simplicity. The beauty in summat so daftly perfect. We’re all chasing after big, shiny things, forgettin’ what truly made us smile.
But deep down, I know. He’ll always be there, waitin’ to pick me up when the world knocks me down. Not just a snack. Not just a sarnie. My grillie. My first, my last, my forever.
Bread, butter, and cheese. Bloody perfection."
