There's a hundred thirty-one of them, I counted all the stairs
And the light goes out at seven so you fumble for the door
And the radiator argues with the family on four
And the hallway smells like garlic and it smelled like it before
Oh it's nothing you would brag about, it's nothing to adore
But I hung a little curtain and I found two folding chairs
And I made the tiny window into something that repairs
And it's mine, and it is holy, and it's answering my prayers
Third floor walk-up, third floor walk-up
Got a window like a postcard of a complicated night
Got a kettle and a lamp and a ridiculous delight
Got a ceiling I can reach and a radiator fight
Oh it's small enough to fill it and it's full of me alright
Third floor walk-up, pour another cup
Every building in the city's got a somebody looking up
And tonight it's gonna be me and I am never giving up
There's a couple who are laughing on the other side the wall
And I've never seen their faces but they're awfully good company
And at eight o'clock they argue and at nine they watch TV
And at ten they play a record that is older than me
Oh, I've built a whole religion out of what I cannot see
And I love them like a brother and I love them not at all
And I'll never ever meet them and I'll never ever call
And a city is a miracle of little people, small
Third floor walk-up, third floor walk-up
Got a window like a postcard of a complicated night
Got a kettle and a lamp and a ridiculous delight
Got a ceiling I can reach and a radiator fight
Oh it's small enough to fill it and it's full of me alright
Third floor walk-up, pour another cup
Every building in the city's got a somebody looking up
And tonight it's gonna be me and I am never giving up
I'm behind on half the bills and I'm behind upon the rent
And the elevator's broken and it's broken to this day
And the landlord doesn't answer and I know he never may
And I'd trade it for a mansion if a mansion came my way
Oh that isn't even true and I don't know why I say
That a person needs a palace when a person's heart is spent
All I ever really wanted was a door and some cement
And a window and a whistle and a place where I am meant
