Small brass key in a kitchen drawer,
under the sellotape and the coupons.
Two teeth worn flat on one side.
Warm from the palm. Warm from the wait.
I tried the shed. I tried the bike.
I tried the flat above the chemist.
I tried a locker, number four.
Every lock said no, and stayed.
The key that opens nothing now.
Somewhere it opened something once.
That's enough. That's enough.
A hand slid this into a coat
and climbed three steps and pushed.
Kettle on. Radio low.
A door that shut behind them, soft.
No label, no paper tag,
nothing inked on a lid in blue.
Just brass, and the shape of a lock
that somebody replaced in June.
The key that opens nothing now.
Somewhere it opened something once.
That's enough. That's enough.
I could hand it over the counter,
let it lie on the felt with the rings,
let a stranger sort it into brass
and a bin marked FOUND, and close.
Or keep the metal warm instead,
and never find the door at all.
The hallway's still there, lit and papered.
I just don't get to walk it.
The key that opens nothing now.
Somewhere it opened something once.
That's enough. That's enough.
Drawer shut. Tape back down.
That's enough.
