Verse

Step one: extend the ladder, four to one, base to height.
Step two: set the feet on level ground, test the load before the climb.
Step three: glove the hand, scoop from the outlet inward.
Composite shingle, organic debris, standing water at the seam.
The bubble in the level sits off-centre by a hair.
I note it. I do not correct it. The fall is adequate.

Verse

Step four: flush the trough with the hose at low pressure.
Step five: observe the discharge, confirm the ground slopes away.
Step six: descend facing the ladder, three points of contact maintained.
Wet leaf matter, grit, one tennis ball, a shingle nail.
Dust lifted on the finger from the fascia board.
The light above the pump goes from red to green.
