Intro:
The lights blazed across the capital, draping the streets in a veil of illusion. From a distance, it was a sea of colour, a mad swirl of neon where anything still seemed possible. But round the corners, behind the polished façades, the shadows stretched long—unseen by those who refused to look.
Atop a building, he watched the city below. Laughter, shouting, the never-ending party. A theatre of light and darkness. He spread his arms wide, like an emperor watching Rome go up in flames.
Down there, they danced. They drank. They bathed in carelessness. Clinging to illusions, drowning in the vapours of forgetfulness, moving to the relentless thud of bass echoing through the night. The neon glow masked the cracks. Everyone played their part.
For a moment, he almost envied their ignorance.
But he knew.
The flames were already creeping—silent, starving. Truth didn’t need a roar; it burned quietly, slipping through every crack, every gap left by indifference.
One day, the masks would fall. One day, the lights would dim, and the laughter would choke.
And then what?
A reckoning? A spark of realisation? A revolution, born of fire, carved from the ashes?
Or… nothing.
He smiled.
Neon flames don’t burn
