Two in the morning, thumb across the glass,
scrolling down a list of people I let pass.
There's Danny with the boat, there's Danny with the truck,
I never merged them, never had the luck.
There's a landline in there nobody picks up,
a kitchen on Saint Anne with a yellow phone.
I know the ring, I know the four short steps,
I know the hands that hung it back at home.
I don't press call. I hold it and I know
every one of these by heart, and let it go.
Marie-Josée, last texted March of nine,
"drive safe, it's black ice past the county line."
I never answered. Now the message sits
like a coat somebody left across a chair.
There's a man I owed a tank of gas last fall,
there's a number saved as DO NOT, and no name.
I could recite them like a hymn I half-forgot,
the area code, the way the sevens knot.
Down the hall the fridge kicks on and hums,
and something orange breathes behind my door.
I'm not lonely. I'm just fluent
in a language nobody speaks to me now.
Numbers I never deleted,
names I can't call,
I know them all,
I know them all.
Numbers I never deleted,
names I can't call,
I know them all,
I know them all.
Two-fifteen. The screen goes dark.
He's still waiting. He's still waiting.
Two-fifteen. The screen goes dark.
Somebody in this house
has nothing left to forgive.
